Michaela Coel mines Rwanda’s pained history of global exploitation

Black Earth Rising kept me hooked from week to week as it delved into a messy cobweb of the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide and the global players seeking to keep the truth hidden. One quickly learns, as Michaela Coel’s character Kate Ashby does, to trust no one and that things are not always as they seem. I particularly loved how the show challenges the historic power balance between European colonial powers and African nations, while exploring the aftermath of their presence and the challenges African nations face today. As Kate Asbhy learns more about her past and faces her brokenness head on, she seems to drag us and the entire nation of Rwanda along on her path to redemption.
